Concern for older workers following rise in unemployment rate
September 17, 2020

Business As Usual for PRIME Cymru

PRIME Cymru’s work is more vital than ever, amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Our staff continue to help clients to find employment, training and volunteering opportunities during a time when they need us the most.

Older workers are not only at greater risk of becoming seriously ill from Coronavirus, but are also more likely to lose their jobs. According to jobs and community site Rest Less, nearly 200,000 over 50s have become economically inactive since the Covid outbreak.

During isolation, our Officers were sometimes the only people our clients spoke to all day.

Development Officer, Paolo Piana, said: “From our clients’ perspective, because they were very isolated, they were so grateful for someone keeping in touch.

“We realised that part of our role was to be there for them and make sure they were OK.”

Throughout Wales, our Officers have seen a real sense of community spirit. Many clients embraced volunteering opportunities such as making cakes for NHS staff, neighbourly shopping or collecting prescriptions.

As people across Wales return to work, we continue to offer bespoke advice and guidance to those who need it. If you are looking for help to get a job, start your own business or gain new skills, please get in touch with PRIME Cymru on 01550721813 or enquiries@primecymru.co.uk.
